Tallahassee and Leon County boost power protection with APC products

While most organizations would like to be operational every hour of the day, emergency services absolutely need that high availability. While downtime can be expensive for every business, effective power management can be a matter of life and death when it comes to emergency services: If your job is fielding emergency calls and coordinating with first responders. This is a concern that the city of Tallahassee and Leon County, Florida, addressed.

An ambitious public safety project
As the capital of Florida, Tallahassee is an important city for the state and county governments. In addition, the federal government has offices there as well. The region is also prone to hurricanes and tropical storms, so the threat of power outages is always present. In a city of 300,000 that also houses several major universities, it's important for emergency services to have proper power protection.

"Power management can be a matter of life and death for emergency services."

In order to provide high availability emergency services, the state and county governments joined forces on an ambitious project: Combining these services in one Tallahassee/Leon County Public Safety Complex. By combining these departments, public service officials could consolidate their efforts. In order to ensure that their facilities were reliable, they needed efficient uninterruptible power supply and power conditioning solutions.

The construction manager, design team and IT representatives from seven different agencies met to pool information on their power protection needs. The team selected the following APC power supply products to maintain reliable power protection for the entire complex:

  • Two APC Symmetra MW UPS systems.
  • InRow chilled water cooling system with EcoAisle Containment.
  • StruxureWare data center management software.

The results: A 24/7 public service facility
The combined Public Safety Complex has been open for two years. During those two years, there have been eight power outages in the area, but the complex has not lost power once thanks to the power conditioning measures and APC products that have been implemented. The facility has run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week since opening, and emergency responders have fielded an average of 500,000 calls per year.

Carl Morgan, Leon County's construction manager, summed up the finished product in a Schneider Electric article: "Responders now have the ability to collaborate and share information and data across entities, prepare for natural disasters and have everyone in the same place for response planning."
