Fire extinguisher placement matters in a data center, especially in relation to other systems.

3 steps to reduce fire risk in data centers

The best power protection solutions can help businesses prepare for a variety of disruptive events. When it comes to fire prevention, businesses should take a comprehensive stance to keep the possibilities of data center fires relatively low. In a room full of valuable hardware, there needs to be enough protections in place to work with each other for full suppression.

alttextFire extinguisher placement can matter for a safe data center.

Use the following tips to set up a safer possible environment in your data center. These steps can go alongside a data backup plan for a full sense of recovery and help mitigate all of the different risks associated with a sudden fire:

  • Placing extinguishers correctly: Where you place important suppression agents can matter as much as the kinds you use. In addition to portable extinguishers, there are also wall- and ceiling-mounted sprinklers to take into account. Measuring all of these locations against each other can give you an idea of which areas are most covered and which are vulnerable.
  • Smoke damage reduction: Don't focus so much on fire you forget about the possible damage of smoke. A system should be in place to manage smoke so it poses less of a threat to both employees and equipment.
  • Using a smart approach: New advances have made it easier to coordinate data center fire protection than before. Smart sensors and alarms can both add more strategy to the way you fight fires. Make sure your alarms are functioning correctly and aren't too sensitive, either. Obviously alarms aren't most effective on their own but can be powerful when used as part of a plan that includes other techniques.

On top of all of this, there are the UPS systems you may have in place. As a part of your backup plan, these can make fires and other disasters pose a far weaker threat. Contact Custom Networks for help designing a fully operational system.
